On World Kidney Day, doctors from Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow, organized an awareness and education rally to highlight the global burden of kidney diseases. Prof Narayan Prasad from the nephrology department shared alarming statistics, noting that 850 million people worldwide suffer from kidney disease, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is responsible for at least 2.4 million deaths annually, projected to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2040.

He also stressed the impact of acute kidney injury (AKI), which affects over 13 million people globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, and significantly contributes to childhood morbidity and mortality alongside CKD.

The event saw active participation from SGPGI director Prof RK Dhiman, CMS Dr Devendra Gupta, MS Dr Prashant Agarwal, senior nephrology faculty, and SOTTO-UP president, highlighting a collective commitment to raising awareness about kidney health.
